Opt Out
As a current International Student studying at Memorial University of Newfoundland, you will be enrolled in the Foreign Health Insurance Plan provided by GuardMe as of January 1, 2026. The foreign health insurance plan is mandatory for registered international students studying at Memorial University.
I am studying outside of Canada for the Winter 2026 term
If you are not in Canada, the Foreign Health Insurance plan is not available to you and you MUST OPT OUT by completing the Out of Canada Waiver in order to receive a credit to your Student Account. The deadline to complete this opt out waiver is January 20, 2026.
I have MCP and want to transfer to a student union managed health plan
You are eligible to opt out from the foreign health insurance plan and be automatically enrolled in your student union health plan if you are a full-time student (excludes undergraduate students on a work term and Intensive English Program Students) with valid MCP (must be valid from at least January 1, 2026 and beyond January 20, 2026). Student union health coverage is intended to supplement valid provincial healthcare coverage.
Note:
- Graduate students are only eligible to opt out in their first semester or Fall semester unless they could not meet opt out deadlines due to delay/ineligibility of MCP coverage dates
- Medicine students are only eligible to opt out in Fall semester
- MI students are not eligible to opt out in Spring
- If you are an undergraduate student on a work term in Winter 2026, you are not eligible to opt out online. For opt out instructions, see https://www.mun.ca/international/students-and-alumni/health-insurance/opting-out-of-the-foreign-health-insurance/#workterm
- If you are part time student, you are not eligible to opt out
- If you are an Intensive English Program Student, you are not eligible to opt out
To opt out, you must attest to holding a valid MCP and you must provide the start and end date of MCP coverage. MCP must be valid on or before January 1, 2026, valid beyond January 20, 2026 and subject to renewal. This opt out is valid for the remainder of the 2025-2026 academic year (September-August). You will need to opt out again in Fall 2026, if eligible. The deadline to complete this opt out and transfer is January 20, 2026.
I have Alternative Coverage Accepted by Memorial University
If you already have valid coverage through the Libyan Scholarship program administered by CBIE or the Interim Federal Health Plan as a refugee claimant, you may opt out of the Foreign Health Insurance. To opt out, you must attest to holding a valid acceptable alternate coverage and you must provide the start and end date of this coverage. This opt out is valid for the remainder of the 2025-2026 academic year (September-August). You will need to opt out again in Fall 2026, if eligible. The deadline to complete this opt out is January 20, 2026.
*Please note that charges for your Foreign Health Plan will not be removed from your account until the end of January provided you have successfully completed the opt out process on this site.
The opt out window is currently closed. For future term updates, please continue to monitor your school’s website and the GuardMe opt out page.
